You are relatively low on hours and wouldn't mind jumping over to the US. I too thought about it, btu with 18 years in (6,000+ hrs as PIC) it just wasn't worth the trouble. Like you, I don't really understand all the workings of the US system. So I decided to stay in the UK and you know what? It's not this bad either.
