The last buddy pass I gave out was 10 years ago and the person ultimately had to change their destination and rent a car to get to the original city.
I'd trade buddy passes AND non-rev for X confirmed tickets (no blackout dates/seat limits) per year per pilot. I've had the same experience as you on the buddy passes and have only used two in ten years. I've used the jumpseat a fair amount but I can probably count on one or two hands how many times I've non-revved. If I'm going somewhere, I want to know I'll get there and back, so I normally buy tickets anyway. I get others use them, so a choice of either would be a welcome change.
