I've had the same experience as you on the buddy passes and have only used two in ten years. I've used the jumpseat a fair amount but I can probably count on one or two hands how many times I've non-revved. If I'm going somewhere, I want to know I'll get there and back, so I normally buy tickets anyway. I get others use them, so a choice of either would be a welcome change.
United has a nice program where when you check loads abox in the corner says, "do you want positive space", and gives a price. It's usually very reasonable. From the SE to NYC generally about 100.00, sometimes less. Transcons can be as low as 150.00 If you opt for positive space no back up flight is needed for commuters.
