The issues UAL has had in the last few weeks:

- in-flight engine failure
- compressor stall
- hydraulic system failure
- engine fire shortly after takeoff
- hydraulic fluid leak
- wheel fell off on takeoff
- overshot taxiway after landing
- missing panel discovered after flight

There have been a few other mechanical issues, but the point is that the only incident that can be blamed on the crew is the one in IAH where they overshot the taxiway. Apparently the controller asked them to expedite exiting the runway and they took the turn too fast. There but for the grace of god go I.

Perhaps they have inexperienced maintenance crews that have contributed (though I doubt that’s the case), but inexperienced flight crews certainly aren’t the issue here.

Frankly I think they’ve just been unlucky and the media/public is hypersensitive to airline issues these days. So what would normally be non-events (e.g. diverting for a warning light in flight or finding evidence of a bird strike after landing) become headline news.
