There's lots of reasons why "so many people" bypass upgrade at every airline - most of them involve QOL relating around bidding power for schedules, vacation and training. That said, our bypass percentage has been pretty typical over the last decade compared with our peers, but we definitely haven't had the super-fast upgrade that others have had. Factors in that are our inability to bid back to FO, as well a single payscale vs. differential pay.
