Unless the jet was some vinatge airplane, the BTMS would tell the crew right away that the tire was gone. So the crew knew that they have a tire issue, but may didn't know the tire was actually gone.
Vintage like a 737?
On planes with EICAS, a BTMS message would not be a clear indication that the wheel fell off... my first assumption would be that BTMS broke, not that the gear fell off the plane.
