Until a procedure change many years ago arming the spoilers was optional on the 767. Many pilots did not arm the spoilers as they deployed automatically when reverse thrust was selected. Made for a much smoother landing. It would be unusual to prevent reverse thrust selection if spoilers were not deployed however perhaps United's engine type has differences.
