along these lines, I got SOO ****ed at my FO a few weeks ago. 600 hours TT *****ing he has to sit reserve and that he cant pay of his $80,000 prestigious flight school loan. So he is going to declare bankrupcy to get around paying it. I asked him if he did the math before flight school...80,000 loan paid back at 20,000 a year salary...... He asked why I am so concerned, so I said it does concern me...when I want a student loan for myself or my kids I'm going to have to pay more for it cause of punks like you who default because they dont see the big picture. He can brag about buying a new $30,000 car tho, but can't pay back the people who gave him the opportunity for this job.
That irks me as well. I'm just getting ready to get out there and while I am concerned about paying the loans, the thought of declaring bankruptcy never even enters my mind (besides I didn't think you could get out of student loan responsibility by declaring bankruptcy). There seems to be a growing trend in the youth today (yes I'm older than the average college grad) to act without thinking of consequence and expecting to not have to take any responsibility for bad decisions. For the record, someone with character traits like that
IS NOT the type of person I want responsible for flying the aircraft that might be flying my family around. A better decision would be to defer those loans for a year or so until he could get on his feet somewhat and then start to pay them back. Yes the interest rate for deferment sucks, but that's life. You take the loan out, you understand that it is your responsibility to pay it back. Let's not screw up the borrowing situation for the future people. Grow up and take some responsibility for your actions.
