I would go so far as to say that day turn schedules are not an option here. If they are, they are consistently very senior, or are too insufficient in frequency to build an entire line out of them. That type of schedule can be created on reserve with some considerable effort, but at least a few overnights will still definitely be part of the deal each month. Schedule "stability" and reserve do not mix, but short trips and reserve is quite common.
The closest thing to what you are describing is Duty Pilot, Assistant Chief Pilot, or working as a union rep. I am not familiar with anyone working on special projects, but I am not an ATL guy.
That said, I think the best compromise is to aim for a low away-from-base time. There are 2- and 3-day trips which start in the evening on Day 1 and end in the morning of the last day. Most of us prefer to work a 2-day with that type of schedule than to slug it out doing 12-hour+ 1-day trips.
