Would it have mattered? If the union had said "don't volunteer to be an upaid mentor," do you think that would have dissuaded anyone from doing it? I'm not trying to be argumentative. I think we're all aware that the union has marginal impact on the mindset of a subset of pilots who think they are still in the military, or think they are a part of managment... and not blue collar union workers.
And I'm not saying mentors are not important. I'm saying it takes a lot of time to do it right, and I question why anyone would do it without being compensated.
It would have mattered if DALPA would have secured it as a payed position before ever having to say "don't do it." Chicken or the egg type situation I guess.
