OOBWS primarily exists as a benefit to the company. But yes, the unintended consequence is that they benefit pilots like myself who don’t live in any base.

Out of base pickup at the time of coverage is a standard component of most major/legacy contracts. It would take negotiating capital on our end to remove that. Personally, I believe that negotiating capital is better spent elsewhere.
