Yup. I was on a grievance committee for a few years. About half the time when I would call the pilot filing the dispute the first question was, why did you answer your phone?
Arbitrators have ruled in the past crew schedulers can’t be expected to know the entire contract. If in doubt ask to speak with a supervisor. Unless of course like you mentioned it benefits you.
At least at my airline, you are
never, ever required to answer the phone.
You may have to respond/call back, but you can
always let it go to voicemail.
