The problem inherent under the proposed changes is that the decision process is ripped from the AME hands, and any further action takes place after a cold denial, rather than a medical review and waiting period. It also means that the incentive to shorten wait times during the deferral process is gone. The upshot is a career-ending process, instead of a delaying one.
As a career pilot trying to come back after a head injury, dealing with the dumpster fire that is FAA Aeromedical, I shudder to think what the backlog will be if there are more files in the queue with zero incentive to work through the caseload.
