And mil helos dont have TCAS.
ATC should have given distance/bearing to traffic, not just, "pass behind THE crj"
Helos probably saw "A crj" and planned in passing behind them.
and that ATC call 15s prior should have been "PAT25, immediate left turn, crj 9 o'clock 2000ft away" some direct action assuming helo didnt see proper traffic.
I hate to Mon morning quarter back though. Who knows how stressed the controller was or busy/distracted ect. I'm sure he'll be haunted by this for a long time. He didn't cause it at all. But possibly could have prevented it.
I'd say PSA was the lowest causal factor. Blinding below and coming out of left bank.
But what if (hypothetical) the pilot was a little low on the visual and the helo was at his 200ft max. In no world should a helo (even at 50ft) pass directly below and approaching aircraft.
im sure changes will happen, but there need to have all helos pause/slow/or hover (which helos can do relitevly easy) north of 33 and wait for landing aircraft, then go.
If the helo at least had a transponder, the jet and helicopter targets should have had a flashing red "CA" on ATC displays, as their system projects flight paths and alerts to a collision risk.
