Insanely productive and wealthy in the early 1900s, after it was kicked in the nutz during the Great Depression, it went through, well, all of it.
Socialism. Militarism. Liberalism. Money printing. Protectionism. Stupid wars (Falkland Islands). Weakened institutions. Etc.
Still a great place. If you’re a rich tourist. Or a wealthy retiree expat.
A lot of ruin in a nation, as they say.
