I understand they try to make things "better" for the pilots, and are elected officials.
It just seems like i go to work for an office, they say, "hey we get the 'daily sentinel newspaper' delivered to us here. If you want the daily paper, its $20.00/month, or if you dont want the newspaper it's still going to cost you $10.00/month

You may have to pay a shop fee because you are benefiting from the work rules and pay negotiated by your bargaining representative. And those work rules have to be continually defended with hearings, arbitrations, and court proceedings. It cost the union money to do that.
