I don't mean to sound ignorant but arn't the 900/800 almost exactly the same? What would be the big difference between the two?

Out of all the narrowbody jets i've flown on, the -300 seems to have a sh*t load more power than other 737 types and even the 320 series, but the 319 comes close.
