Exactly how did denying the VILs for pilots benefit the pilot group in general? Those who stayed home enjoyed their QOL. Also, it meant they didn't bid a line so some line holders got better lines, a few pilots who would have been on reserve might get a junior line now, etc. Seems like a win/win. Also, exactly what leverage has the pilot group gained by this chest puffing maneuver other than a few reps able to beat their chest and tout they stood up to the Man. GMAFB.
If you don't think the company is determined to continue cost cutting measures you're not paying attention. Let's see how tough the reps act if the company sends out warn notices. I swear we can't get out of our own way sometimes.
