a while back there were a few 787 new hire FOs, but generally 787 vacancies are filled by current pilots
Anyone who wants the 787 is more likely to get the 717. There have been others who have quit because of their aircraft assignment. The company makes an effort to tell the pilots what their aircraft assignment is before showing up to class, and people have deferred class dates because of that info. The actual bidding for AC doesn’t happen until day 1 so if a senior person changes their mind it can change everything. It is reasonable to have separate fright/pax classes but there is no guarantee if you’re assigned a pax class. Company can change their mind at any point before day 1.
