The only flexibility the company might have is to offer class dates which they know will align with specific vacancies. They might well do that if you ask nicely and have a good reason, ie ask for a later class because you want a specific domicile which is specific to a certain fleet.

I can't imagine they (AS) would intentionally assign someone to a fleet they didn't want as a "test"... they have enough retention problems in the face of big three hiring as it is.
The difference is that alaska values their new hires and wants them to feel welcomed. That was not the culture at HAL for a long time.
