No one GAS what anyone wears. If you like your leather jacket, it probably looks more in line with the standards than no hat, no tie & a northface jacket which is about as equally common.
The majority of the flying public DOES care what we look like. We should care what we look like. If you can’t dress yourself, look sloppy, people start wondering how in the world you can fly an airplane. Spare us the “but appearance doesn’t make me safe” argument. We signed up for both.
