Only a little bit. Arbitrators can't sail very close into the wind against policy and precedent, otherwise they set themselves up for appeals which are a bad for an arbitrator's reputation and career.
I found sending a DART in to ask SLI questions very helpful. There is an SLI submenu one can select to have questions answered directly.
