I agree the gear down alone isn't the cause, but perhaps the crew was overwhelmed with all the Master Cautions? Maybe the elevator was sluggish due to the degraded control and wouldn't let them pitch down as quickly as needed? Perhaps it's safe to say their margin of error at that phase of flight was so slim to non-existent that the introduction of any number of these otherwise individually recoverable events doomed them, sadly.
