Spirit has simply gotten too large to not exist or be merged. The gov would rather there be a merger than have that much capacity exit the US market. Prices would sky rocket for everyone. And if our all airframes if they went back to the lessors I can guarantee you not a single US airline would get one. All those overseas government subsidized carriers would pay wayyyy over market value to get the much needed airframes rather than wait years for Airbus to fulfil their orders. Case in point, not one of Spirits former airframes has gone to a US carrier, not one. So this pipe dream of Spirit pilots being out on the street so that those who left can justify them leaving will not happen.
You're making a lot of assumptions there. I'm not disagreeing with you, but be careful declaring yourselves "Too Big to Fail".
