Right now, they could say what they always said to us , pre 9/11 (to our union, not mediators since I believe this is the first time we’ve gone this route) which is:
we’re in a different segment of the industry. You can’t compare us to United. We’re cargo. Compare us to UPS. You want United rates, go to United.
That was the company’s line every negotiation we went through, pre 9/11
But if UPS inks a deal that matches the big 3, the company can’t use that excuse anymore.
I’m imagining they will pivot to something along the lines of “our business model has changed after DRIVE and the airline division is more like Atlas and Kalitta now”
