That one article said Delta, under EU rules, is out near $400k in passenger fines as well as hotel and meal fees for all passengers. Delta also has a brand to protect. Europe is pretty ridiculous, things like this only add to the stereotype. They didn’t have a way to figure this out before it turned into a few million dollar mishap and defame a Delta pilot?
Yeah, unfortunately this is the way a lot of European airport authorities operate.
I remember in AMS they would have airport employees present when we got off the bus at the airport. They would approach crewmembers and start talking with them to size them up. Pretty bad in my book. However, when you are flying in someone else's country you have to abide by their rules.
It's pretty much common knowledge that they target foreign carriers; particularly the US-based ones.
