I hated in person recurrent, listening about crazy scenarios that they miraculously handled perfectly, you know, just food for thought. And every captain has to attend once every 5 years. I’d rather do an extra sim event. We have great stuff in the topics of interest, the safety magazine, and the QCQ hot topics, what PTC group think dreamed this up?
I have no opinion on this new captain leadership course, as it was just announced. However I don't see in person discussions in the negative light that you do. If it is just a bunch of wannabe sky heroes recounting their exploits, then yes, it is all a bit much. However I have found that you can get a whole lot of positive info from real discussions with real pilots vs the LMS stuff (and yes there is a lot of good info in various places). I never "hated" the in person day of CQ. One year we actually had some ATL controllers do a presentation. Very good, and impossible to replicate with some LMS module.

I chuckle that you say "what PTC group dreamed this up." Other pilots were saying the exact same thing years ago--when we got RID of the in person day of CQ.
