Kind of a PITA but we just use ATMs when in country. We have a second account that we only keep $500 in so if our info gets out it can’t all be taken. We transfer funds online from one account to the other. If you research ATM fees and exchange fees you can usually find which one is the best deal. We try to minimize cash purchases and have an “international travel” credit card we mostly use. We ended up bringing back euros last time and lost value on the round trip transaction. Almost everything can be purchased with Apple Pay tied to your credit card now. Big city downtown banks have the best currency options and availability. Try finding Icelandic krona in the US. Not happening but they will by them back for a hefty fee.
