Status Quo: During the status quo period, the parties may not engage in "self-help," meaning that the union may not strike or engage in other job actions and the Company may not unilaterally change the contractual rates of pay, rules or working conditions. However, either party has the right to engage in lawful activity designed to educate and inform its constituency or the public of its position, such as informational picketing.
Court decisions over the years have set parameters as to what constitutes lawful activity by the parties during the status quo period.
