The 401k contributions have also been lower, because it was baked into their business model: cheap labor, growth, cheap labor, more growth, and cheap fares. Sure, you could drop to zero and pick up open time, but the same can be done at most airlines if you put in the effort. Accepting the lowest pay in the industry for decades was never a good deal.
