Jeez. This thread is a great example of how terrible APC (and social media) can be, creating dissent and a race to the bottom of the well.
All these pages of comments to state the obvious, common sense, factual stuff: Data shows that customers like galley PAs. Some pilots do them for that reason. Some do them because they like talking to groups of people. Some do them because yes, they enjoy attention. Most captains choose not to do them because it’s not required and maybe it feels awkward to them. Either way, a huge majority agrees that professional pilots shouldn’t do a standup routine or play a musical instrument as part of their PA.
I saw a captain do one a couple weeks ago; she was probably 60 years old, you could tell she’s done this a ton and for a long time, ran through a normal PA, nothing fancy. It was… fine. Good, even. And if a few customers enjoyed seeing their captain face to face, probably worth it. I don’t do them because I think I would appear awkward and not send the right message.
That’s it. This doesn’t have to be an argument willed with judgement of those who do things one way or another.
