No, not exactly what "AI" is doing now, at least when it comes to "learning to fly".

Essentially, you create a reward system where parameters need to be met and the models that don't meet those parameters (ie if they crash) don't advance to the next round. Adjustments are made on the fly so to speak and new, tweaked models are run over and over again millions of times until a working model is developed. Via the magic of Nvidia, this can take place quickly and results quickly compound.

In this way a computer can learn a task, such as operating a vehicle. A 6:00 min long video, about 1:45 in it starts getting to the meat of it.

AI Learns To FLY

Obviously more tweaking is needed, and other parameters need to be met, but the basic concept is quite fascinating. Currently, our autopilots are dumb and just do what we tell it to, but I can envision the next round being "smart" so to speak where they're learned models, which would mostly give us a hands off approach to operating the jet.
