Yeah, they changed the design. Slats are supposed to tolerate hydraulic loss. But in 100% of subsequent crashes where an engine departed on takeoff, the plane has rolled to the engine loss side prior to crashing. It might be a simple VMC roll ... but slat problems is not an absurd theory.
