I’ve learned not to under-estimate the politicians when it comes to Trump. They hate him way more than they care about damaging country and hurting our citizens.
I would say the odds of the government staying shut down for another year from today are about the same as the odds of Russia launching a nuclear attack in advance of a land invasion. If this continues past thanksgiving I’d be shocked and past Christmas then I’d agree it’s a big deal. But still probably not a black swan.

Certain senators may loathe trump enough to keep the government shut down for a year, but it only takes 5 more to decide to end the insanity and reopen. No one wants to be responsible for ruining everyone’s travel plans and whoever is keeping it shut down will bear that distinction if thanksgiving and Christmas are ruined for tens of millions of Americans.
