The legacy carriers were taking paycuts pre-bankruptcy to avoid bankruptcy. This was done because they were afraid their pensions would be terminated in bankruptcy (they were). The carriers all went bankrupt anyway, then the judge forced more paycuts with no regards to the voluntary ones they had already taken.

In United’s case, the judge referred to Jetblue’s lower payrates when forcing the pay cuts. This is why the other carriers say we’re all in this together.
