That's true, but if the flight was canceled and the new flight number is because it's a new flight, you do get reroute. And it's challenging for pilots to be able to tell the difference because you have to check in the FAA database somewhere. Certainly, if it's published as a cancellation, I assume it's a reroute. (you may know this, but I'm certain most don't)
