They've tried and failed on the revenue side. Blocked middle seat, then take out a row for extra leg room. Neither seems to have worked all that well, and they don't have the time or money for fully reconfiguring the aircraft for premium seats at higher prices. When they tried simply raising the ticket prices without changing the product, the result was horrendously bad load factors.

A lot of the remaining passengers are the ones who know how to play the game and fly for just the base fare, and they are only here because the base fare is so low.
