It’s to smooth out the long term retirement curve. Pilot careers are simply widgets on a conveyor belt. Having everyone retire in a small window is not helpful to keeping the factory running smoothly.
It's interesting to suggest age discrimination in hiring. I don't believe it's true as the average age has held steady around 35-37 for any given class in recent memory though.
