SAN is another expensive West Coast base that has cheaper surrounding suburbs. Its no different than SFO, PDX or SEA. There are tons of pilots who own 2 million+ homes in these domiciles and there are plenty of pilots who own 500k houses, a marginal drive away. There are 500k homes within a 45-minute drive from SFO. That is no different than SAN, SEA, and PDX.
that’s all relative… Rates may be higher in particular States, but how much home are you getting in those places?
I’d argue a $800k home in say Idaho would be more like $2million in SEA. Rates may be higher in Boise, but for the type of home you could very well be break even or ahead.
I’dd rather pay $10k for an $800k home with 3500sqft and 3/4 acre yard, than pay $10k for a 2million small home with no yard in the Bay Area.
Then factor in exactly what your property taxes go towards.
I don’t own property in either place so just an example before the fact checkers dig into real estate values.
