Never did CAS at San Clemente. As I mentioned did 3 or maybe 4 missions at `Camp Pendleton. It’s not fast mover friendly. There is no reason at all those missions can’t be run from George regardless. George puts you next door to 29 Palms, Chocolate Mountains and close to the China Lake ranges, Yuma TACTS range, R2508 ect… The places we did most of our training.
Well maybe things were different back then but these days they do LOTS of missions out over the water, big exercises with AWACS and intercepts, CAS on San Clemente and a little bit on Pendleton, and stuff with ships.
Have to stay near the beach and the grunts to be relevant.
Also, George AFB is a superfund toxic cleanup site.
