Well maybe things were different back then but these days they do LOTS of missions out over the water, big exercises with AWACS and intercepts, CAS on San Clemente and a little bit on Pendleton, and stuff with ships.
Have to stay near the beach and the grunts to be relevant.
Also, George AFB is a superfund toxic cleanup site.

Did all that. All those missions can be easily flown out of George. George is 12 minutes flying time to the coast and Pendleton. Can you even carry live air to ground ordinance out of Miramar now? It was prohibited out of El Toro over the populated areas and interstates. Had to do downwind takeoffs into the hills. George would have had none of those restrictions. Let’s not even get into the helo noise tests the Marine Corps flat out cheated on using empty helo’s but reporting them at operational gross weights.
Miramar will be a toxic waste area as well when it’s shut down.
