Some of it may be generational/traditional in that more seasoned pilots may have started out and the engineer in which you did every walk around, for years on every leg. Then you finally upgrade to FO and enjoy your quick, simple preflights. It was often said that the FO job on the 727 was one of the easiest in the fleet. Also if you do WB with a relief, many companies use relief lines whereby you are the Relief Pilot every leg and again, back to the walk around.
