My first ten years out of college, 30-50% of my take home went to Sallie Mae and private loans.
"Just go to east BFE stare college" isht always an option.
That's pretty unusual circumstances. My nephew, also emancipated, went out of state but was able to qualify for in-state since he got a local job and didn't have a legal parental anchor in another state.
In general you can do two years CC and then finish out at State while working part time, and hopefully living at home. Other off campus with roommates. If we're talking aviation that degree would be more than sufficient.
With that said I am in no way endorsing the bloated, excessive cost of higher education. But for now, that's the game you have to play.
