Now the question remains on how does UPS get those MD's to the boneyard? We have a retired Boeing (NOT a McD) guy living in our neighborhood and he says his buddies say the proposed fix does not work. If that is the case, FX and KD will follow suit and there are going to be a bunch of MD's needing a lift, or will be taken apart on site, which is extremely costly. New spherical bearings should work fine, for a very long time. If they replace or inspect the bearings I'd ferry them... empty, minimum fuel, minimum reduced thrust.
That's not saying I'd want to operate them in regular service, without a lot of thorough analysis, and redesigned bearings installed.
