SYD and HND are Open Skies with the US, but also locally slot restricted. The entire state of UT is 3.5 million which means SLC would have to heavily rely on connecting traffic to feed these flights.

In 2024 and 2025 SLC saw traffic of about 28M people. Planners are saying there could be a terminal C at around 35M travelers. That might also be an impetus for a runway extension, but a terminal C would require the big hangar torn down, twy E and F probably moved, and the fuel farm and fire station moved. All huge projects.
According to CPO, they have permission now to lower the power lines to the height required to extend the runway.
