Think back to all the big names who built American, Rockerfeller/Carnegie/Vanderbilt/Ford/etc..., none of them were genius, in fact, today many of them would be in jail for their business practices. By todays standards, many of them weren't necessarily great dudes. It's undeniable that this dude has had a huge, positive impact on the world. Sure he hired the right people, but he is the force behind all that change. He only fell out of favor because he backed a particular politician, which is beyond ridiculous.
You are right. People today have a much more balanced view to 19th century business leaders. People don't think they were "great dudes." That is the same as the public perception of Elon. Elon hate started long before he go involved politics.
