But still, the AF puts ASOS's and ASOC's down embedded with the Army to do exactly what you described. If the Army doesn't do it, I suppose the intent is that the embedded AF unit will. Clearly, the Army doesn't always agree with how the AF employs airpower though, so maybe you're on to something.
I did FAC training with some A/F enlisted guys. The Marine Corps and the A/F do things very differently. Our close air support is just that, close. The A/F guys we trained with said they didn’t feel comfortable with the majority of the close in calls we were making and their pilots wouldn’t fly a certain way just because the FAC told them to. As a pilot though, I fully understood what the guy in the sky was going through and was able to quickly relay what I needed him (her now) to do. That Aircraft Commander knew that I understood his limitations and was willing to attempt what I told them to because of that.
