VAS was meant as a firebreak for reroutes. It's pretty clear because the language in 23 L specifically says that a pilot cannot be rerouted if a VAS pilot is available. The company should have at least 2 per category in the AM, and another in the PM precisely to soak up reroutes. I'd wager that it's not because they are too restrictive, but because they are expert tools for an expert crew scheduling shop, and that's certainly not what we have.

Same goes for standby rotations. I've seen them used a handful of times, and the times they do award them, they have zero idea how to use them. I saw one 5 day go out as a greenslip to NYC, and then the pilot got released by scheduling after the 2nd day. Basically a DH and one day of SC paid a 5 day GS.
