A due diligence study as to the root cause of the fall from grace must be carried out before throwing a half a billion dollar band aid to fix their ongoing problem. Unfortunately, the rise in fuel costs is a hinderance to the cause too. You may be right about a private concern purchasing the carrier for parting out the assets.
