Anyone know how the loads usually are or the busy days, etc? A friend of mine told me to get to Narita, and once there you can jumpseat around on the Northwest system, but I'm a little hesitant as I've never really traveled around that side of the pond using my privileges.
My 2 cents:
In the past year I have jumped on UA and NW without any problems in and out of Asia. If loads are heavy getting in or out of the US try going through HNL then accross to Narita or HKG. Both airlines are very accomidating to off line jumpseaters. In my experiance if you have a choice NW should be your first choice. UA is also great but I have had to get to the crew because the Ticket agent was not in the "know" and NO is the default answer.
Also check the Atlas schedule as a backup. They never have jumpers and always have extra seats if you can find the airplane. Check their website and call their dispatcher direct to make a reservation and check the schedules, also ask what hotel the crew stays at and meet them there, it will save you hours of frusteration trying to get through security in a foreign land! It's not first class, but it will get you there in a pinch.
